
Mumbai: In a significant move to bolster the city’s suburban rail network, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) has announced an e-bid invitation for a massive project. The tender seeks to procure and maintain 2,856 air-conditioned Vande Metro (Suburban) Broad Gauge Rakes over a period of 35 years. The initiative, part of the MUTP-III and MUTP-3A projects, also includes the crucial task of establishing two new maintenance depots.

The tender, formally identified as No: MRVC/G/IIIA/RS/101/R1, is for the “Procurement cum Maintenance of 2856 Cars in configuration of 12/15/18-Car Air-Conditioned Vande Metro (Suburban) Broad Gauge Rakes with comprehensive maintenance for 35 years including setting up of two New Maintenance Depots under MUTP-III and MUTP-3A.”
Key Aspects of the Project
The project’s scale is unprecedented, involving the procurement and long-term maintenance of nearly 3,000 train cars. The rakes will be configured in 12, 15, or 18-car sets, a design choice aimed at optimizing passenger capacity on Mumbai’s bustling suburban lines. Interested bidders must submit an Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) or Bid Security Amount of Rs. 50 crore. The deadline for the submission of bids is December 22, 2025, at 14:30 hrs. - The e-bids will be opened on the next working day at the appointment time if the e-bid opening falls on a gazetted holiday or is subsequently declared as such.
