Political Crisis in Nepal

On September 9, 2025, Nepal’s political landscape was plunged into turmoil as Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned from his post. The resignation came in the wake of widespread ‘Gen Z’ protests that had escalated into violence, leaving 19 people dead. The protests, which began as a response to the government’s controversial ban on several social media platforms like Facebook and X, quickly morphed into a larger movement against perceived government corruption and authoritarianism. Protesters, largely composed of young people, demanded a complete overhaul of the political system. The demonstrations saw protesters storming and setting fire to the Parliament building, as well as the homes of senior politicians, including the President. The unrest has raised serious concerns about the stability of Nepal’s fragile democracy and has prompted India to issue a travel advisory for its citizens.

India’s Vice-Presidential Election

C.P. Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s candidate, was elected as the new Vice-President of India on September 9, 2025. He defeated the INDIA bloc’s nominee, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, by a significant margin. Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes against Reddy’s 300, a victory that was widely anticipated due to the NDA’s numerical strength in Parliament. The election was necessitated by the resignation of the previous Vice-President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, due to health concerns. As the new Vice-President, Radhakrishnan will now serve as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His election reinforces the ruling coalition’s strong position in both houses of Parliament.
